Daily Lenten Practices

Prayer Chair: Fasting from Hurry

Just as we are doing in worship, you are invited to designate a chair in your home that will be your "Prayer Chair" for Lent.  This might be different for each member of your family.

Find a time during the day when you can go to the chair for at least 10 minutes, perhaps light a candle, and then spend time with the prayer meditation we will provide for you (see below) based upon the worship theme, scripture reference, and the prayer we prayed on Sunday.

In this way, even if you are not able to come each week, you will be connected to the communal reflections.*

The God Box:  Fasting from Worry

PictureRepurpose empty tissue boxes or shoeboxes by decorating them with colored paper or paints, maybe even using gift wrapping. You could glue tiny objects to the box, like crafting gems, buttons, or even pieces of broken CDs to make a mosaic effect. There are lots of photos to spark your imagination on Pinterest!

The God Box is a way of handing over the things that we worry (perhaps even obsess) about that are beyond our control.  You can make a God Box out of a small box, perhaps shoebox size, and decorate it however you choose and place the Serenity Prayer on the lid (printed on the meditations linked above).

Whenever worries pop up, you are invited to write your worries on bits of paper and put them in your God Box as a sign that you are letting go of that which you cannot control into the care of God.  Replace the time spent worrying in your head with speaking the Serenity Prayer by H. Rienhold Neibhur, 20th c. theologian.*

"Hanging Out" (More Ideas for Children of all Ages)

This Lent Series is all about taking stock of the pace of our lives. Increasingly, even children are scheduled into so many things that their lives can feel stressful at times. Each week, you can explore a different technique for “hanging out” – for learning the skills of connecting and settling.*

Lent Week 1 (March 10, 2019) - "The Right Tempo"
Glitter Jars
These jars are so cool! This is how some parents are transforming “time out” by using these jars to allow children to watch the slow settling of the ingredients that actually help slow and calm down the child’s rhythm and energy.
This is a way to recognize that there is a right tempo or energy for different times – sometimes big and squirrelly and sometimes calm and settled.

Lent Week 2 (March 17, 2019) - "Tuning In"
Sensory Check-in
On this week, we are focusing on being truly present in the moment. This exercise called “5-4-3-2-1” can be a good calming process to do so kids can learn how to turn an intense moment into a focused one (on something else other than what’s making them irritated):

Week 3: “Preparing a Table”
This week utilizes Psalm 23, and so we are focusing on making time to “prepare a table” like God does for us and taking time to eat and share together.

Ideas for living this out:
  1. Have a tea party (real or pretend)
  2. Make Psalm 23 key chains or bracelets.  Links through the picture or the address below the picture for instructions.
